Property taxes are an expense that’s hard to pay for many homeowners and with a number of seniors and those that are blind or a have disabilities, being on fix income some will find it nearly impossible to pay this year.
There is a program that can postpone paying property taxes.
The State controller’s property tax postponement program allows homeowners who are seniors, blind, or have a disability to defer current year property taxes on their principal residence.
To qualify, they must meet certain criteria.
Must have at least 40 percent equity and an annual household income of $51,762 or less this year.
There are other criteria that need to be met, and you do need to apply each year to postpone paying taxes.
The state will put a lien on their home and there is interest that is added to the lien.
Presently, the interest rate is 5% per year. For example, the postponed of $1,000 the interest would be $50 per year.
This year, October 1 to February 10, applications will be reviewed in the order received, based on postmark date.
Typical processing time is 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the volume of applications.
Applications are available in September 2024.
